Since March 2003, the Shiprock UMTRA Ground Water Project initiated an extraction system that removes contaminated water from the subsurface of the floodplain and terrace areas.  Ground water is extracted from 12 extraction wells and 2 interceptor drains and transported to an 111-acre solar evaporation pond located south of the disposal cell.  The wells are strategically placed to extract ground water from the contaminated plume.  Pumping from the extraction wells may continue for as long as 20 years.
Ground water remediation at Tuba City is accomplished with an active remediation system that consists of the Extraction of contaminated ground water using extraction wells.  Treatment of the extracted water using ion exchange, degasification and distillation to produce treated water that is cleaner than the site ground water and injection of the treated water is released into the aquifer.
